Novel
Andy Mcnab and Rober Rigby-Boy Soldier
I selected this book because I like novels which involve action and spying. In this case I read all the cherub books and I enjoyed it and then I looked at the back of the book to see what boy soldier was about and it had the same outline as the cherub books. This book is non-fiction and it is about a 17 year old boy called Danny who tries to rack his grandpa down because he is a enemy but only to find himself helping his grandad to get out of trouble at the end of the book.
This book is set in England Wilkshire 2005. The main characters are Danny, Elena and Fergus. Danny is a fit lanky boy and he is 17. He is the grandson of Fergus who is in his 50's and suffers from a limp from a gun shot. Elena is Danny's best friend and she tries to help him solve this mysterious puzzle.
I think that the author has chosen to write this novel because he wants to share a message to everyone saying that anything is possible and that you should never give up hope. The novel is also about passion and love for each other. That is the thing that kept the characters in the novel to keep going. I don't think that the novel had anything to do with the author or with his past life. I think he just likes writing books about spies and action
After finishing the story, what would I like to find out more about?
I would like to read the next book and see what happens to Danny, Fergus and Elena
What did I not understand?
I didn't understand why they suddenly wanted to kill Danny as well because he hadn't done anything.
What would I like to ask a particular character?
To Danny: How do you cope so well from being a way from home?
- What would I like to ask the author?
What has motivated you to make this novel?
This book does not really relate to anything else. It is fictional but it is a young James Bond type or Alex Rider or Cherub. This book is non fictional because it is not real.
I was enjoying reading this book because it is fast moving and I love these king of spy movies. As the novel finished I was really looking forward to reading the next one because if I don't read the next one I will never know what happens. There was not really any characters I could relate to but I learnt alot of army and soldier talk which was really interesting. I think the part where Fergus and Danny finally got along was really inspiring. I really enjoyed it and this is why I want to read the whole series.
For the film editing I would take out his foster home because their was nothing really intersesting that happened their. He has described each movement very carefully which makes you feel like your in the story as well.

Poetry
Calm waves move smoothly and sway
Untill it reaches the angry bay
The sand is smooth and is as light as a kite
So soft and cramed up really tight
As the waves hit the rocks it makes a splash
So loud and angry ts like having a bash
This is the way if the sea all day
All sunny and bright getting hit by the sun ray
Untill it reaches the angry bay
The sand is smooth and is as light as a kite
So soft and cramed up really tight
As the waves hit the rocks it makes a splash
So loud and angry ts like having a bash
This is the way if the sea all day
All sunny and bright getting hit by the sun ray
Cycle Tour
Day 1 Cycle Tour: 25th August Tuesday 2009
I was really nervous and anxious about what the 1st day of bike riding would be like. In the morning we met Paul, Pete and Ricky who were going to help us through out the bike tour. First up we got taught all the safety precautions and then we took off on our morning ride to West Cowie. This ride was incredibly strange as we had lots of head wind and tail wind. I didnt really like all this wind because it always confused and frustrated me. We were riding along the beach but it was dark and grey so it wasnt nice to look at. After the beach we turned left to and we started riding next to the fields. It was windy but the fields still looked great. TheWest Cowie loop was 21km and when we arrived back at campus we were all greatful to rest our sore legs and have lunch. All of this was great untill we found out that we had another loop to do after lunch. The next loop we were doing was called the Warooka loop. This time we started at a steep hill which was a good chalenge to start off with. We then rode to Warooka to drop our letters off to our parents. The warooka loop was alot harder then all of us thought. There was a nearly 100km wind against us which made it extremely difficult to ride, and the long stretch home was agonising as it never seemed to end. I was finally relieved to arrive back at campus 1st with Nick broadbridge after the 25km Warooka loop. After today it added up to a 46km which im sure all of the boys were proud of doing. After the cycle tour that day i am sure everyone was happy to just have some free time and relax. After relaxing on my verhanda with Harry Barnes, Matt Faull, Jackson Myhill, James Pritchard and Jack Viney we all took our eskis to the shed for dinner. For dinner that night I had cut up beef with sauce which was very filling and it tasted great. It was still very windy so all 25 of us slept in the shed that night as we listened to Moff's great stories. We all went to sleep at around 9:45 pm.
Day 2 Cycle Tour: 26th August Wednesday 2009
We woke up at 7 am in the morning to have our breakfast. I felt quiet pumped and ready for the ride ahead. At nine am we headed up on the bus to the Innes national park. After yesterdays ride I felt like I knew what was waiting for us and that I was ready for the challenge ahead. We started off riding together at the start. There was still lots of wind making it hard to ride but apart from that the ride was quiet peaceful. On the way we saw lots of road kill which was horrible and plus the headwind the whole way made it extremely painful. We had a little stop at this big hill where Moff stood at the edge to take videos of us but unfortunatley as I was going down the chain fell off and I had to wait for Paul to fix this. I wasnt happy becuase suddenly being top 3 I went to last place. The most painful bit was when we were going up the never ending hill which finally did end but it seemed to go on for ever. After the massive hill we saw the fantastic light house. The wind was so strong it was blow
ing at about 100Km/h. To have an idea of how strong it was Seb Mugford was leaning into the wind and he wasnt falling. The pictures we took were magnificent, well it wouldve been if my camera didnt run out of charge. After we took the picture we had lunch which we all enjoyed. After the light house and lucnh we went abit further with the head winds to see waves making huge crashes into the rocks. Jack Viney, Billy Mcfaull and I all stood at the rocks waiting for the huge waves to splash us. This was pretty fun. Paul then had a bet with us that if any of us made the whole way back to the bus on left gear 2 and right gear 8 he would get us a prize. Many of us took on this challenge and strait away Jack Viney
Nick Broadbridge and I took out at the front to form a little group and to support each other. This was the best part of the ride becuase we had the tail wind but best of all I had my two mates to support me the whole way. At the final huge mountain that everyone was dreading we kept on pumping it and gutting it out and we all finished at least 3km ahead of any of the other riders. We were extremely happy. We then went half way down the mountain to support the other people coming up. Overall 8 people made the climb with out stopping which was a great result. It was then all downhill from then with the tail wind as we glided back to the bus. The bike ride was only 33km but it was still very tough. This was by far better then yesterday and my legs didnt feel that bad either. After the bike ride we then had an hour of rest which we all just relaxed and snacked on food. It was windy again so we all had dinner in the shed. I had spahgetti bolonaise tonight. It was a bit cold but it tasted delicious. We again listened to Moff's stories abit freaked out about the ferals and what they do but apart from that it was a pretty good story.
Day 3 Cycle Tour: 27th August Thursday 2009
I woke up knowing that today was the last bike ride and that it was going to be the toughest. The best thing was that there was hardly a breeze which was excellent. We got on the bus again to Brentwood and unloaded all the bikes. The first couple of kilometers were ausome. It was just a dirt road with lots of bumps which I really like. I then saw Jack Viney towing little Jack and I later asked him if it was hard. He told me it was good fun and a challenge so I had a go. Like Jack said it was really tough but I enjoyed it as it was a good experience. The hardest bit was when a was towing jack through the thick grass for about 2km. It was extremely difficult and I was really happy to have completed it without stopping. After the grass land we had a big rest and this time Luke Robinson took on the challenge of towing little Jack. I felt alot faster riding by my self but I missed the company. We rode for another couple of kilometers untill our designated lunch spot. I didnt have much lunch but to my joy Seb Lou spilled his scroggin
and I ended up eating most of it. I now had lots of energy for the final ride to Brentwood which is a little village. My grop at the front took turns in going first as there was a head wind which the person at front had to endure the front wind. The end bit was ausome as we rode on a dirt path and as we were going up the hill it was amazing to see how much Jack Viney got so much air. Most people were relieved and sad that the bike tour had ended. It was a great experience and I think I have improved my riding skills alot. The trip ended by Paul giving all the 2 8 boys some pepsi as a reward. We then took the bus back and we were all very exited because we would move into our wardlis tommorow. Because their was hardly a beeze we camped and cooked outside. The problem was that my fried rice packet exploded and I ended up having some of Jacksons. The total amount we rode today was 50km adding up to 129km in total. Im sure all the boys were extremely exausted and to find out we had a 3.4km run tommorow didnt help our self esteem. But we were all looking forward to the challenge so it was pretty good

Living in a Wardli
For the last 3 weeks of camp I will be living in the wardli with Jack Sullivan, Nick Karalis, Chris Karageorges, Harry Barnes, Harrison Marks and Angus crawford.
Highs
-Making new friends
-Sleeping in a bed
-Food
-Independance
-Funny moments
-Skills for future
-Freedom
-Cooking
-Warm showers
-Having a clock
Challenges
-Living with people who are lazy
-Keeping wardli clean
-Doing the washing
-Cleaning up after others
-Solving problems
-Waking up early
-Going to sleep early
-Eating what you dont like
-Not having a say
-Having to sleep with snoarers
In the wardi I see myself as a friendly guy and I am usually tidy. Somethings I would like to improve on is having shorter showers, helping my mates more, be more active and sort problems out with mates. Some habits I dont like include not opening the toilet window after using it and snoaring which doesnt let people sleep. Some skills I would like to improve during the camp is mopping which I find very difficult to do and doing the dishes which is also hard and boaring. These are the things that I would definetly need for my future benefit.
A big issue that occured in our wardli was definetely mopping. It was the hardest and longest job and no one was happy when it was their turn to do the mopping. One problem was that one individual went home sick in our wardli so someone always had to fill in for that person. We mostly argued about whos doing the mopping but we sorted this out by having one person mop and another person sweeping. Another issue included showers. Usually everybody didnt have time to have showers in the morning and their was no certain order of doing this.Usually the person first to the shower would have the privallidge while the last person missed out and had to find spare time for this. The way we solved this was we sat down with Paul and he said it would be a good idea to split the shower groupings in day and night. He suggested that 3 should go at night and 3 in the morning. Our wardli then suggested that the slower people would have their showers at night because it would be a hold up in the morining becuase we have a lot to do. Our last issue was arguing. When ever someone didnt do something correctly it always ended up in a massive arguement. Even the littlest thing turned out into a huge arguement. To solve this we had a method of sitting down and talking calmly and if only one person had a problem then it wasnt a issue, but if about three people had then we talked about it and then it was agreed. This method was very good as we all had a say in what we think didnt work and what we need to improve on.
The experience at wambana has taught me how much my mum works at the house hold at home and I have realised that I have to now do alot more at home. I also think this had benefited on our future skills because many boys this age will not have the chance to live on their own. Living with 6 other boys at this early on in our life will give us skills if we are going to share a house in the future.

Fitness Program
Day 1 August 28th 2009 fitness program
I was pumped, i woke up at 6:30 and layed awake in my tent for 15 mins. I then got my gear on and made my way to the shed. 10 mins to go I was stretching and everyone was too. As soon as it went seven we were off. Jack Viney, Angus Craford and I led the way. It must have been the bike ride as every ones legs were killing. Half way to the wooden bridge I started to get tired but I was keeping a constant pace. At the bridge, Jack Viney sprinted away and Angus Crawford got really tired and stoped for a rest. The run was more agonising then I thought. I think I was going pretty well though because I was second and there was a big gap between me and the person behind me. I finally saw the shed coming up and I sprinted the rest of the 3.4 and I got a time of 15 mins and 5 secs. Jack Viney and I then went back to support the slower runners. I thought I could go faster but I think I got a reasonable time for my first run.
Day 2 August 29th 2009 fitness program
I felt better this day as we were sleeping on beds. I slept with my gear on and I was in the shed by 6: 45 am. My quads were still bit sore but I was ready to smash my 3.4 time I did yesterday. I started off at a good pace and this time it was only Jack Viney and I running together. We were together until about 400 meters to go where Jack Viney again smashed me in the last leg. When I finished I looked at my time and I had got 14 mins and 15 secs. I was extremely happy with my result the only bad thing was that my legs were killing.
Day 3 August 30th 2009 fitness program
I didn't feel as good this morning. I knew we had the 5.5 and I wanted to do well. As usual I went to the shed at 6:45 to stretch up. At 7 am we took off and this time their were three other runners with me. Jack Viney, Matt Faull and James Pritchard. The first kilometer was pretty good as we all stayed a s a group. My right calf then cramped in a lot of pain, and I was running with it for about 2 minutes. I could not stand it so I had to stop. I was upset and angry and I could not finish the race. I still walked most of it but I mostly encouraged the boys running. I hope I will do a lot better in the coming races.
Day 4 August 31st 2009 fitness program
This morning our alarm didnt go off and we barley made it to the game session. This morning we were playing a modified soccer game. The teams were wardli 2 and 3 on to wardli 4 and 5. The modified version basically ment that to score everyone on your team had to be on the attacking side or you didnt score. It was wet and many people were slipping and sliding. Around half way through the game Dale changed the rules to galic football and it became alot faster. I really enjoyed playing galic while other people didnt but it was still good fun for everyone. In the end my team won 7 to 3 and i scored a very lucky goal where I was pretty far out and the ball went through both Seb Lou and Jack Viney.
Day 5 September 1st 2009 fitness program
This morning I woke up with a bad back because I slept in the shed the past night. This morning was a power training session and I didnt really know what to expect. At 7 o'clock Dale told us that we were going to be running around a kilometer down the beach. My patner was Jack Viney and we went at the back to support the slower people. After the kilometer run we stopped at a seaweed smelling calm beach. Dale then put us into rows from slowest to fastest. We then had to run atleast 10 meters to the other line touch it and then come back and touch the other line. We kept doing this until Dale was satisfied. THe next activity was doing the same thing but at the certain line we had to do 5 pushups. This was extremely painful but it was a good challenge. The next activity was you had to sprint about 40 meters with a person of about the same ability as your self thought seaweed. I tripped over a couple of times but it wa fun and hard. The last thing we had to do was the Indian file back to the shed. The Indian file is when you have a certain amount of people and the person at the end always has to sprint up to the front. I found this the hardest activity as you didnt have much time to recover and your had to do this for about a kilometer.
Day 6 September 2nd 2009 fitness program
Today I woke up feeling pretty good about the 9.2 run. First I went to Nick Krantz for some tape to strap around my calf which I really thank him for. I then did some stretches at the shed. Dale gave us an option for doing the 9.2 or doing less. I did the 9.2. As we left Dale told us to run as a group until we reached the beach. I thought this was a good idea as we were running on the never ending road and we had everyones support to keep going. When we got to the beach we had a good idea of the groups people were going to be split into. JAck Viney, Angus Crawford, Matt Faull and I all ran at the front. Angus led strongly unil about half way upp the beach where he took a rest. This is where Jack Viney took the lead and I was second and Matt was third. THe order became evenly spread by the time we reached the dirt road. By the dirt road we could barely see each other and the dirt was soft and hard to run in. About half way I felt like throwing up but I kept going. As we saw the shed now I felt a little surge and finally reached my goal of doing the whole run with out stopping. I saw my time and I got 46 mins and 15 seconds. I was pretty happy with this effort and I finished second in the class.
Day 7 September 3rd 2009 fitness program
Today I am sure everyone was glad to have a rest from the running and just play a game. Today we played galic again and the teams this time were wardlis 2 and 5 vs 3 and 4. 3 and 4 were the stronger team on the day and they beat us 7 to 4. I scored two for us but it still wasnt enough. Most people are now really positive for doing the 3.4 tommorow because we have all improvd our fitness significantly after doing the big 9.2.
Day 8 September 4th 2009 fitness program
Today we were doing a 3.4 and I was feeling pretty good. The weather looked prbut etty good but then it started raining. It felt alot harder then any other run we did, even the 9.2 but I still ran the whole thing with out stopping. It was the same as the other 3.4 but it was still harder. I dont really know why. I ended up with a time of 14 minutes and 5 seconds and it was my personal best by 5 seconds. I think it may have been harder because I ran harder. The next time I do the 3.4 I hope to get under 14 minutes for the first time.
Day 9 September 5th 2009 fitness program
This morning I woke up with a sence of relief that we were doing a game this morning instead of a run. Bairdy took it today instead of Dale. We first did a warm up like the Indian trail but we zig zagged between each person. We trhen played a reaction game when Bairdy called crusts or crupets and then you had to chace the persons whos name was called. You also got out if he said an irrelivant word and you moved. We then played a dogeball like game where each wardli had ago of being in the middle and they had to get each person out. The person at the front could use their hands to protect the person behind them. Today was a pretty good session as the games were fun and athletic.
Day 10 September 6th 2009 fitness program
Today I woke up feeling really exited about the 3.4 but when I got outside it was all windy. We started off pretty slowly because of the head wind. It was very hard work but Jack Viney and I had a lead on everyone else. On the way back I felt really good and fast. I had a steady pace the whole way back. When I finished I realised it was the first time I had finished first and beaten Jack Viney so I was pretty happy with myself. I thought I got faster but I was happy with my 13 minutes and 50 seconds. Hopefully next time if their wasnt as much wind I can smash my time and get under 13 minutes and 30 seconds.
Day 11 September 7th fitness program
Yesterday Moff gave us a option that we could either run at 6.55 or at 7.oo. I chose to run at 6.55. Most people started running early and I got a good start for the 5.5. I didnt feel that tired and I was going pretty well. Once I reached the jetty I started feeling really tired and I brethed heavily. About three quaters of the way up the mountain I saw many people coming including the people who started at 7.00. I didnt really know how much gap I had on them but I knew Jack Viney was catching up quickly. On the pathway I could barley run but I still sprinted the last 200m back to the shed. I looked at the clock and I ended up getting a time of 22.25. It was my first actual run of the 5.5 but I think I did pretty well. My next aim is to hopefully get under 21 mins.
Day 12 September 8th fitness program
Today was our second training and I knew it was going to be gut running and mental pain. We did the usual jog to the beach and then Dale told us that we woud keep on running from one line to the other. It was more difficult this time becuase one way we had to go up hill. We then did the same thing but with pushups, then situps. I really felt like throwing up after it. We then had to run as fast as we could around a a star shaped out of humans. It was incredibly hard. We then finished it off with the Indian trail all the way back. We cuaght several groups in front of us so I felt pretty happy. I reckon today was harder then the 5.5 but I knew I would benefit from it so I was pleased with my efforts.
Day 13 September 9th fitness program
This morning I made sure that I stretched up for 20 minutes and drank water. I really wanted to get a pb for the 3.4. I started off really well, perhaps to well because as I was coming back from the walkway I felt a sharp pain in my stomach and I had to stop and hold my chest. It felt like I was winded and the pain wouldnt go away. I had never experienced it before but it was incredibly painful. Luckily Nick Krantz stopped for me and he offered to walk me the whole way back. I was really dissapointed today and we have only got 1 more 3.4 so I have to make the most of it.
Day 14 September 10th fitness program
My back felt a bit stiff from sleeping in the shed that night but I didnt mind because we had a game to look forward to. We played soccer to start off with and this time it was wardli 2 and 4. These teams were pretty even but my team had the upper hand. About half way in we played galic football and like always the game got alot faster. In the end we won 7 to 4. After the game I had a deep think about tommrow and how I would run it. I am hoping to get under 55 minutes
Day 15 September 11th fitness program
Today was our big 11km run. I woke p at 6 30 feeling pretty confident. I was challenging myself to get under 55 mins. Dale drove us to where we start the 11 km and it was really windy. When we first started we had a good tail wind and I was going pretty well behing Viney. The group with Dale then started creeping up on me as a began to feel tired and then I needed to stop becuase I needed to do a number 2. THe group past me and when ever I kept runnung i needed to go. We then had a big head wind and plus the sand had no grip so it was incredibly hard to run. I basically walked the last 5 km and a few people past me. I think I ended up coming 8th with a time of 1 hour and 16 minutes. I was incredibly dissapointed with my time and if we were to run it again I think I would have a better idea to do it and be better prepared.
Day 16 September14th fitness program
I was feeling abit rusty after the parent weekend because of all that sugar but I was looking for a Pb for the 5.5. After the 11km I had a tactic. I started off by running at a constant pace with Matt Faul and James Pritchard and after the halfway mark I started running harder and it pulled off because I had the energy to run at that pace for the whole time. In the end I smashed my pb and got a time of 20 mins and 49 seconds which I was really happy about. In the end the distance between me and the second person was 2 minutes so maybe I really wasnt rusty from the parent weekend at all.
Day 17 Septeber 15th fitness program
This morning we were playing a modified version of soccer. For the start you had to pick a person of about the same ability then the other person would go on the opposite teams and you would stick on each other. My patner was Matt Faul and we had a little disposal competition which we unfortunately lost count. After the soccer we moved to the galic football and my patner then became Dale even though I dont think he was aware of it. We didnt have much time left and I didnt get many touches at the end. When it all finished my team won 5 goals to 1.
Day 18 September fitness program
This was our last fitness program and we got a choice of doing a 3.4 or game. Majority chose game. We played a tackling galic game which was great and my team was doing pretty well at the start. (probably because we had all the footy players) The opponents then caught up becuase as people finished the 3.4 they all started to join their team. In the end they won but it didnt matter becuase we all had a fun and enjoyable fitness program.
Snorkelling
September 3rd 2009
Today we were going to go snorkeling. I didn't feel cold because we had just played our Gaelic game from the morning. But when we arrived it all changed. It was freezing! Just looking at the water made us shiver, but we still got our gear on and wardli 2 and 3 had the first tutorial with Bairdy. He taught us how to use snorkels but I was already fairly confident with that because I use snorkels for my swimming training. We also learnt to clear our goggles with our spit and to duck dive to test our snorkeling ability. When everyone was confident of going out into the sea we all got in as a group and we made pairs. My partner was Billy McFaull. We snorkeled above lots of wonderful fish including the sweep. Swimming above the seaweed was also a wonder as I was wondering what was hiding in them. We swam three quarters of the way to the jetty and then we turned back. I found lots of wonderful seashells and rocks. We got out and I'm sure everyone was happy because the water was freezing. The worst thing was getting changed because as the wind hit your skin you went numb. I'm sure the greatest challenge about snorkeling was to keep not think about the cold and to not get out. It was painful but most people didn't get out which was a good achievement. The visibility was pretty good as well, it only got bad when someone pit their fins on the ground and moved the sea. The best part of snorkeling definitely had to be the view of the bottom of the ocean which you will never be able to see if you were on land. This was a great experience and I am sure that I would love to do it again once it gets hotter.

History Tour 1
During history tour 1 we learnt about many types of trees, minerals and where they were mined. Moff also talked to us about old Australia and what changed and happened over the time.
Trees
The Norfolk Island pine is used to make masts for ship and is fire and drought resistant.
The Aleppo Pine is from Spain and was brought for its colours. It also brought the Marino sheep.
The She Oak is very drought resistentand the seeds can only open when burned.
The Malle Tree has trunks which grow undergound and is fire resistent.
Minerals
Lime Stone is Calcium Carbonate. It is used for making houses and to purify iron.
Stenhouse Bay is where gypsum was mined and used to make plaster.
Inneston was the earliest miningtown in Yorke Peninsula and mined in gypsum.
During the trip Moff also talked about the old Australia when each house hold averaged around having 30 guns. We also saw old crop machines which were interesting. We saw the lighthouse from Althorp and Cape Spencer. Moff also took us to the place with aboriginal water holes. The size varied and Aboriginals are burried along these wells so we found a few bones as well.

Hardwicke Bay Community Project
August 31st 2009 Hardwicke Bay Community Project
Today we went to help and clean up the community of Hardwicke bay. We were greeted by JAne and Sherrel who took us to the place where we will be cleaning up. They first talked to us about different weeds and how they are affecting our country. We then went to a bit of land with weed over growing on it. First we pulled out all the weeds and we began to dig out a path. It was very hard and tiring digging out the path but when JAne said to us that the community will be very greatful and that their is never many people to help it gave all of us the extra strength that we needed to pull of the digging to make the path. We didnt finish it in the end but we were very close and they were still happy. Afterwards the communtiy supplied us with lunch which was very delicious with ice cream for dessert. At the end I had no regret of helping to make this community I better place.
Questions
Q1: Why are weeds so bad for the environment?
Name 3 weeds you have learned about today.
Boxthorn, horehound and soursob. Weeds spread over land leaving no room for native plants to grow. The plants spread very quickly and native animals die becuase of lack of native plants.
Q2: What role do humans play in the distribution of weeds?
Humans transport weeds from different countries and bring them over by boat.
Q3: What are some of the common ways that weeds spread?
Weeds can spread by the wind and by dropping seeds.
Q4: Are weeds the same all over Australia?
Not all weeds are the same. Different weeds have to adapt to different climate change.
Q5: Is climate change likely to add to the weed problem? If so, how?
It probably would because when it is hot the weeds adapt to that and spread more of it along the coast or country.
Q6: Why do people volunteer to weed and plant local plants in public reserves and areas?
They vollunteer because they want to protect native plants from weeds and they do not want the environment to suffer.
Q7: What can you do?
You can destroy weeds in your backyard and plant native plants.

Today wardli 2 and 3 volunteered to help out the disabled to plant trees. My first thoughts were what they were going to be like and how they would react to us, I soon found out when we got off the bus. They were actually really good. They were nice, friendly and helpful. Our job was to take old dirt out of pots and then put new dirt into them to help plant trees. My job was to take the dirty out. It was tiring and back breaking but I am sure that the chat of Jesse and Serah lightened everyones mood up. When lunch came we met new friendly people including Anthnony who is good to chat with, Gavin who never stops working and Ronald who is a big North Melbourne supporter and is really funny. After getting the dirt out of the pots I helped carry the new dirt put into the pots back in the green house. Once all was done we said goodbye to them all. In the end I felt really happy and proud that we had helped them because without our help they would have taked alot lot longer making the trees. I wouldnt mind helping out again as you made good friends and it was great fun.

Scientific Research - Hooded Plover
Aim and introduction
Hooded plovers a small birds which camoflouge into the sand on the beach. The hooded plovers are very vulnarable which means it is nearly endangered. It is important to find out ways to save the hooded plover during this research. It is important that we research this becuase once it become endangered there will only be a matter of time until they die out, but because they are still not endangered they can still be saved.
Method
At around 12 pm we went to West beach in search of the hooded plovers. We saw 3 hooded plovers at S 35 14.157 E 136 49.948 the group was made of a photographer, video camera guy, scribe, a threat operator and a GPS operator. When we found the hodded plovers we went in search of eggs but their was no evidence of footprints leading up to them so we did not find any. The cloud covering was abround 50% and it was around 15 degrees and not much sign of wind so there was a pretty good chance of seeing the hooded plovers. Many times we saw other birds such as seagulls but we did not find many. We could not get close to the hooded plovers or they would fly away so we used binoculars and a zooming in camera to get a good view of the hooded plovers. Some methods included that if you could not see any hodded plovers you would stop and turn 360 degrees and there was a 25% that you would see them. The next hooded plover was spotted at S 35 4.406 E136 50.057 where it joined with the other 3 birds. This is when we decided that they were all adults. After we had followed the birds for a few hundred meters they would always fly off back to where we started again.
Results
Most deaths of hooded Plovers occur because of prdators including foxes and humans, the hot temperature which will destroy the egg and erosion of the sand dunes which effect there breeding grounds. Humans have a big impact because they can be sold very highly at some places so people can make easy money. Foxes eat to keep them selves alive and unfortunaltely one of their victims are the hodded plovers. Driving on the road is also a issue as they camoflouge the driver has no chance what so every of seeing the hooded plover and they will run them over. The temperature is always a worry for the hooded plover because they die while its hot and when its to cold they go into hiding. Every tiny bit of information means the little more we will no about hooded plovers and maybe we will be able to prevent them from dying out. Preservation by the government has been induced by methods such as caged nests, development of beach-sharing protocols, detailed studies of breed biology and regular surveys of population. A total of $370,000 has been spent on preservation, with $300,000 on implementing of beach-sharing protocols. You can see by this that the government is making a huge effort to save the hooded plovers.
Discussion
The hooded plovers are at highly vulnerable which means that it is on the verge of being endangered. This would be bad becuase once it is endangered it is only a matter of time before they become extinct. Because they live on the foredune/sand it is easy to not see them and run over them with your car. Erosion is destroying there breeding grounds and preadators are killing them. The hooded plovers are defensless but they have some ways of prtecting their nests such as False brooding where the hooded plover will falsely bend down onto sand preteding that its on its nest. Distraction where the bords pretend to be injured and do funny things with their wings. The final one is leading where they lure their enermy away from their nests and once they get far away they fly back to their nests leaving their enemy.
Conclusion
Extinction cannot be a possibility for the hooded plover. As long as everyone helps and takes care and helps the hooded plover it can defintely not become extinct. Solutions such as beach-sharing protocols, detailed studies of breed biology and regular surveys of population, signposts and designated 4WD tracks can all be put into place, provided that effort comes with it. Everyone can take action. People who do not care and instead try and kill these poor birds should have a fine or maybe a sentence in jail. So remember they are not EXTINCT YET!
Some methods included that if you could not see any hodded plovers you would stop and turn 360 degrees and there was a 25% that you would see them. community Service - Aleppo Pine Removal
1. Aleppo pine originated from the Mediterranean areas which includes Greece, Italy and Southern France
2. It was planted to act as a windbreak for farmers. It as planted as a forestry tree and was recommended as a shade and shelterbelt plant.
3. The Southern Yorke Peninsula Landcare Group is keen to remove it as it is a weed and restricts native plant growth, which restricts native animal growth. It spreads quickly and is a hazard to roads and overhead powerlines, as well as fire danger. They also rob other plants of water and nutrients and competes with other plants. The tree also damages roads, fences and structures.
1.They would volunteer becuase they care for the environment and if they did not have any support they wouldnt get any job done.
2. I felt really good about helping this small group. Even though we only participated in doing a little bit, I am sure everyone enjoyed the hard but fun work as you would never have this oppurunity if you live in the city.

History Tour 2
Today, we headed out on the history tour with Moff. Unlike the last one, this was pretty fun. Our first stop was at the Warooka Museum, which, unlike Art Galleries, was extremely interesting. In it, were guns, books and lots of medicine that they had in the 1800's. We also saw old farm machines that they used. They were very dangerous and they had no safety system owhat so ever. My favorite bit was seeing the bath tub as people hardly bathed then and it was a really small tub.
The next stop was a cemetery which was hidden away from robbers. Most of the graves belonged to very young people. Moff told us to find a epitah and mine was in good care.
Our next stop was really freaky as we went to a abandoned village. There were lots of cattles in their and we were all freaked out about being invaded by ferals. We explored the houses and they were really interseting like their toilets and their sellars.
We then stopped at the york town op shop and a bought a large cup for 50 cents because all the cups at the wardli are very small. I would like to go their again because every thing is incredibly cheap.
Our last stop was at Moff's area where there were alot of seals. It was pretty good but we had to navigate our way back to point Turton from there. While we were buisily navigating our way back I was icking music for everyone from Moffs ipod. We eventually got back after taking a wrong turn into someones car park.

Sea Kayaking
September 7th 2009
Today was our first day of sea kayaking and are gear included of a skirt for the splash covering, wind fleece and a life jacket. Our profesional instructors name was Phil. He gave us a tutorial on all the ways to kayak including paddline forward, backwards sideways and turning 360 degrees. We then learnt how to operate the rudder which everyone was looking forward to giving it a go. Once we had completed our tutorial we did a practise lap in the rock every using all the skills. After everyone had succesfully completed it we rafted up and Phil then told us how to keep our balance. We rocked our kayaks and we also had to lean to one side without falling out. I thought I was pretty good at it. Once we had finished that it was time to go out into open sea. I was exited and we all put our rudders down and we bounced off the waves. The rudders were ausome as our pedals controled them and all we needed to do was paddle forward. About halfway back to campus we turned around this time going with the wind. We all paddled as fast as we could but unfortunately the wind died on us. Once we got to the rock area again we continued on paddling through the jetty and into very rocky water. It was great fun as we had to go through rocks. We only went a few hundred meters and then we ent back through them and I got caught in a dead end so i had toturn around and paddle out backwards. When we got back to the rocky area we had a choice of paddling up to the mat or getting out from the jetty. I choes the jetty which was pretty cool. At the end of the day I was pretty soaked but I was pretty happy and I couldnt wait to do it again.
September 8th 2009
Today was our final day of kayaking and I was really looking forward to it. It was freezing and slippery but we all got in the water all right. Phil took us on are warm up coarse in the rocky area and then we started the journey. We played follow the leader. That is when each person gets a chance of going first at certain points and no one can overtake him. Once we got to the end of our destination Phil shared with us some cool tricks that we could try. One of them was standing on your kayak which I did but with a preson holding on. I also attempeted the half eskimoe roll where you paddle on your side. This takes lots of balance and I was one of the only people who did it. I was pretty happy to be commented by Phil. Phil then showed us a full eskimoe roll ehich everyone thought was incredile. We then turned back to the rocky area but we went past it and we attempeted more tricks. I attempted a full eskimoe roll but failed and ended up out of the kayak. It was freezing! Once I got back into my kayak I attepted standing up on my boat alone and I did it but on the way down I fell in the water again. By this time I was really numb and I was really thankful when we got back on the bus to get my jumper. For me this was one of the best experiences of the camp. I would defintely love to have a crack of it again

Parent Weekend
During my parent weekend I stayed with my Mum, Dad, Matt Faull, Randal Faul and Die Faul. I stayed at Marion bay in a house which included a pool table, table soccer and table tennis. On Saturday we went to Innes national park for sight seeing but I have already seen most of the stuff there. We mostly did table tennis, pool or table soccer for the rest of the parent weekend. On Saturday night we also went to the Marion bay pub to eat with 10 other families and to watch the important Crows vs Collingwood match which Crows unfortunately lost. I was pretty excited seeing my parents but the wait was really nerve racking as I was one of the last people to go. I was looking forward to spending some quality time with my parents and to talk to them about my experience at Point Turton. I wasn't badly home sick but I really wanted to see my parents so it was pretty good to see them after 3 weeks. I now really understand how much Mum does at home to help clean everything up and doing the clothes, dishes and cleaning. I also understand how much my Dad works to support my whole family. With out them our family would not function properly. I love how they always car for me even though they get angry at me alot. I also love that they would do anything to protect me. My Mum always makes me laugh and just talking to her always gives me comfort and lets me relax. My Dad is probably a pretty tough man but I love him becuase he can share a laugh and he plays pool with me which is always a good competition. I am looking forward to all the surfing and the fun week coming up but especially looking forward to going back home to see my parents, grandparents and my brothers.
Surfing
Today was our first day of surfing. It was cold but we had wet suits on so it wasnt as cold. Our instructors were Boyd, Longie, Shane and Mark. Longie was my groups instructor. I had never actually gotten up on a board so I was looking forward to doing so. I caught a few waves but ended up body boarding to the end. About my 10th attempt I got up but the wave had past me. I think I now knew the technique of getting on. I then tried it again and I caught the wave. I was pretty happy. It was a great experience. As this was only a half session day I was looking forward to a big day tomorrow and hopefully surfing the waves with style!
Today I was looking forward to a whole day of surfing. I started off a bit rusty and the waves were huge so it was really hard to pick the right wave to surf on. After lunch I finally got the hang of it and I caught a good wave and had a good ride on my board. I then had about another 4 good rides. I love surfing now and I think I have got the basics pretty well. hopefully after tomorrow I will be pretty good and I can show my family how good I have got.
It was pretty windy on the morning and I had a huge rash on my neck but I was ready for surfing in the morning. It was actually perfect conditions as soon as we got their apart from the occasional thunderstorm. As we finally got out to surf I was pretty happy when I stood up the first 3 times. I then got a bit tired and couldn't stand up as much. About halfway through the instructor took us to the back where their were some huge waves. This was pretty fun. After that it was time to go. This was a great experience and I will definitely try and do more surfing in the near by future.
